Art, politics, food

Workshop/Seminar by Arne Skaug Olsen

The workshop is a collective investigation of the relation between art, politics and food. We will try to answer a few basic questions: What is political art? What makes art political? What is difference between politics and the political? What is the relation between politics and art?

Why food? Food is an all-encompassing aspect of everyday life for all human beings. Its diversity makes it the most complex expression of cultural identity; at the same time it is the most basic expression of human dependency. Without food, we cannot live. In art, food has been linked to the social aspect of relational art, but to a lesser degree to its role as cultural signifier, as commodity or as nutrition. Food has an enormous political and societal importance, and we will try to link this to a notion of politics and art.

We will try to find the answer to these questions by:

- reading and discussing some key texts (se reading list)

- looking at artist case studies

- looking at the next Berlin Biennale
