Audio II: Installation Practices

The course aims to explore sound installation as a particular artistic practice. Moving away from the sound studio and into a diversity of spaces and environments raises key questions fundamental to sound art practices: how does sound impart meaning to a specific space? What technical challenges are encountered when locating recorded or live sound into a given architecture? How does sound installation operate to address a listener? Engaging such questions, the course will be structured as a laboratory where students will work collectively to arrange an audio system within a space, to address the possibilities of spatializing sound, and to individually work with sound materials in composing a final work. In addition, an introduction of live processing techniques (through Pure Data software) will be incorporated, allowing an expanded understanding of sound installation.

The course is taught by Tao Sambolec and Brandon LaBelle, as part of the Nordic Sound Art Program.
