Concepts in Information Design
This two-week course will explore concepts and methods for visualizing and making sense of vast archives of digital information. We will use short design exercises to respond to specific issues that arise through an exploration of online data sources. Hands-on design exercises and experiments will be continually framed and examined by critical reflection and discussions. Students will be exposed to the work of pioneering designers and artists that explore information as a medium including John Maeda, Hans Haacke and Edward Tufte, as well as contemporary artists and designers such as Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas, Mark Dion, Fernanda Viegas & Martin Wattenberg and Stamen Design.
Arbeidsform:
Students will be exposed to research methods and techniques required as the first step to become leading designers within the field of information visualization. Specifically, students will learn how to prototype ideas and develop concept models that explore and interrogate issues critical to culture and society. Special emphasis will be paid to the aesthetic and ethical aspects of the information design field. The primary learning objective of the course is to develop working knowledge of tools, techniques and technologies, while at the same time fostering a critical framework for understanding the social and political context of information visualization and design.
Krav til forkunnskaper:
Concepts in Information Design is multidisciplinary in nature, combining aspects of critical theory, design, and technology. Students are not required to have any specialized technical experience, and those from various disciplines and backgrounds including, but not limited to, design, art practice, performance, textile design, and interior architecture are encouraged to enroll.
