Drawing from Cathedral
A reading of Raymond Carver's short story Cathedral will be the point of departure for this course. In the story, the narrator experiences a small moment of revelation through the act of drawing, which is also foregrounded as a collaborative and empathetic act.
Drawing from direct experience and situations of observation and interpretation, students are encouraged to reflect on the way we communicate our ideas to one another through the medium and our reasons for doing so.
The course will begin with a group reading of the short story followed by a discussion. The course will then be divided into off- site drawing sessions, slide presentations and studio visits, and will conclude with a small exhibition.
