In a Place like that?

workshop by Duncan Higgins

October 3rd to Friday 14th 2011.

Locations, times and days to be confirmed.

The workshop will explore your own and group relationships to certain places. Traditionally this might have been described as landscape or cityscape, nature or man made spaces. However the term place seems more relevant for this workshop.

Place here can be defined as an area or portion of space, locality, location with particular use or non-use, familiar or un-recognisable.

A place has a constructed narrative?

A place has a social memory?

The workshop will encourage you to think about how you work with places: the topography, an idea, it could be personal or intimate spaces or it could be cultural narratives.

There will be an emphasis on working within your developing current art practice and also by responding to a series of locations in and around Bergen. The aim is to develop thinking about your relationship to places and constructing new visual and conceptual possibilities for your work.

Arbeidsform:

Key ideas:

  • To explore and develop question and ideas about the production and presentation within your art practice in relation to making your ideas visible.
  • Thinking about narrative structures.
  • The idea of art as a potential political and emotional narrative.

The aim is to develop practical skills and critical reflection that can help the development of your current art production, contexts for presenting and emotional understanding.

The workshop will be structured using the following: Individual and group tutorials, group presentations and seminars and practical workshops.

Fieldwork – being out making work and site specific installation.

Central to the workshop will be an exploration of both the historical and contemporary conditions that may influence our understanding of particular places in relation to art production today. What they might be? How they are constructed? Where they exist?

The intention is to have an exhibition/installation and web based presence of the work made during the workshop in the final week.
