KHiB goes Istanbul

Subject Areas Print Making and Photography will visit the 12th Istanbul Biennial during week 44. The excursion is a study trip both for the staff and students to develop their knowledge and expertise in the field of contemporary art.

The year 2011 offers two of the most important biennales of arts of which one is in Istanbul and the second in Venice. We see from our previous experience and knowledge that the Istanbul Biennial offers more diverse approach, both in substance and production, when it comes to extensive, international art expositions. We also consider Istanbul more challenging thinking of the interdisciplinary education at KHiB.

SEMINAR

The aim is to organize a one-day seminar in the school premises after the return from Istanbul. The seminar will take place on Friday, November 11th starting at 10 o´clock at C. Sundsgate, 4th floor lecture room. Each of the participants, both students and staff, will give a short, reflective presentation on either on the curatorial matter or introducing an artist and art works on display. By organizing the seminar we will also invite those, who were not present, into the discussion. The planning of the seminar is done in collaboration with the staff and students already in Istanbul.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

Students have to pay their own travel costs, but the subject areas (print, photo and fine arts) will contribute to the accommodation in Istanbul.

SHORTLY ABOUT THIS YEARS BIENNIAL

Over the last two decades the İstanbul Biennial has become one of the most prominent international biennials due to the consistently unique character of its exhibitions.

The title of the 12th İstanbul Biennial is "Untitled (12th İstanbul Biennial), 2011". The title and the visual identity refer to the work of the Cuban American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Gonzalez-Torres is undoubtedly one of the most important artists of the last 25 years, and his work has been featured in numerous international group and solo shows

While Gonzalez-Torres's work will not be displayed in the 12th İstanbul Biennial, his presence will be evoked in numerous subtle ways. "Untitled (12th İstanbul Biennial), 2011" references his particular conventions for titling his work; it also calls attention to a level of communication where language and representation, including names, places, dates, and titles, operate in more abstract and poetic ways. Through his works, Gonzalez-Torres demonstrated that the most successful political moves are ones that do not appear to be political, and that the personal is political and the political is personal.
The biennial is composed of five group exhibitions and more than 50 solo presentations, all housed in a single venue, Antrepo 3 and 5. Each of the group shows—Untitled (Abstraction), “Untitled” (Ross), “Untitled” (Passport), Untitled (History), and “Untitled” (Death by Gun)—departs from a specific work by Gonzalez-Torres. These five works are reproduced in the Companion publication and function as thematic anchors for the biennial. Each group show features a large number of works occupying a single room, and is distinguished by its gray walls from the solo presentations. The solo presentations are linked to one or several subjects of the group exhibitions, and push the themes decidedly further.
