Lecture as Performance

Forced Entertainment, Exquisite Pain

Forced Entertainment, Exquisite Pain

This two day seminar will explore the genre of the lecture performance. The lecture as performance has become a feature in contemporary art. The lecture performance works at the interface between lecturing and performing, providing a mediation between art and knowledge and combining research, visual art and performative storytelling methods. The seminar will introduce examples of lectures as performances that utilize text, image, sound and technology which will be analyzed and interpreted within a group discussion and debate. The seminar is intended to generate a useful resource, developed within a discursive setting, that students can then use to inform their own artistic practices.

Arbeidsform:

Students will be asked for prepare case studies of artists working with lecture performance that will be presented to the seminar group for discussion and debate. Students will be asked to interpret, discuss and rate the different lecture formats. Case studies can be drawn from a list prepared by the seminar leader, or students can suggest their own examples. These studies will contribute to a building of knowledge and practice through presentation, live restaging and group debate over content and style. Students will learn how to research and present material for group discussion and also contribute to an online resource blog which will be developed during the seminar.
