Media Elective: Connecting the Virtual and the Actual

Actively or passively we all take part in the immense data flow that surrounds us, and among many aspects we may consider this a rich source of inspiration. Information architectures, interfaces, widgets and social networks begin to take on as much importance as urban conditions, built structures, objects and our immediate social environment. The workshop explores the possibilities of interpreting phenomena which occur in our digital life into physical space and vice-versa. Through presentations of related research led by the workshop tutors students will be encouraged to actively participate in shaping group discussions. They will be asked to choose one phenomena (existing or fictive) which they want to work with. The goal is to develop scenarios and to build prototypes/artworks that embody a kind of transformation or implementation of a virtual phenomenon into a physical one or, the other way, to add a virtual aspect to a physical phenomenon. The work process is open to individual projects and encourages critical thinking on questions of digital culture. Help in basic electronic and coding will be provided by the tutors. No IT skill is required, team work is encouraged.

The course is taught by Melinda Sipos from Kitchen Budapest.
