An international cross-cultural project in Bergen

A two-week ceramic design art program, a venture between Kunstfac Stockholm , Alto Academy of Art and Design Helsinki and Bergen National Academia of the Arts.

This project is a joint project . Mass manufactured porcelain objects which have not conformed to stringent quality control - but which to the imperfect eye seem fine – are put through a process of artistic intervention and are transformed into unique art objects. This engages with the modern concept of “up cycling” in which objects through the act of recycling are transformed to a higher value than before.

Making or Unmaking?

The Contexts of Contemporary Ceramics

Terminus Hall, Bergen, Norway

Oct 27. - 29. 2011

The opposition that has traditionally existed between studio and industrial ceramics, and which has had a central place in how studio ceramisists have understood themselves, no longer seems meaningful. This is one of the conclusion of the research project Creating Art Value, a project about trash and readymades, art and ceramics. A shift from production to reproduction has taken place. Images and patterns from different sources are appropriated and manipulated. Mass-produced objects, often characterized by disuse, disruption and damage, have come to be increasingly used as raw materials.

The relationship between artist and artisan has also changed. How these changes influence contemporary making and challenges conventional understanding of ceramics and craft practises in general are what this conference wants to focus on.
