Technical workshop: Blast, cut, remove
Sandblasting involves using a compressed air gun to spray sand at high pressure at an object or surface. This technique is commonly used for decorative effects by glasswork studios. In industry, sandblasting is frequently used to remove paint and clean metal surfaces. Surfaces that are not to be sandblasted can be protected with tape, self-adhesive plastic film, glue, etc. The sand then eats into the unprotected areas but bounces off the elastic adhesive layer.
In this technical workshop we will experiment with sandblasting, as well as handheld power tools for cutting, carving, sanding, polishing, etc. hard materials such as ceramics and glass. The aim of the workshop is to introduce the students to different methods for reworking hard materials and to make the students familiar with the equipment available at Subject Area Ceramics for these types of processes.
