Transforming Tradition – Re-interpreting the Museum and its Collections
In recent decades artists have re-embraced the museum as a site for both critical commentary and creative intervention. These collaborations have challenged institutional values and hierarchies through a broad range of expressions that range from the mimicry and appropriation of traditional systems of taxonomy and display; to the referencing of historic artefacts and images as a source for conceptual and aesthetic reinterpretation; through to the rehanging and re-contextualisation of existing exhibits. Visual dialogues between the past and present facilitated by such artistic responses have enriched our understanding of previous cultures, alongside traditional insights offered by archaeologists, anthropologists, historians and curators.
This course will extend this practice through a variety of creative strategies that will nurture individual interests and approach. The Permanenten, West Norway Museum of Decorative Art will be used as a starting point to initiate ideas, but following this participants may determine other points of reference. There are no material or process boundaries – participants can work discipline specific or with mixed media and found objects. Supporting lectures will give a contextual overview of artists central to this trend to open up further discussion and debate. In formulating your interpretation and response the following questions/strategies may be considered:
The physical structures of display and organisation
Display vitrines are often organised by historic chronology, cultural specificity, country/region, manufacturer, artist/art movement, object/image typology or technique. How does the display create meaning or discourse around certain objects? How could you subvert such conventions of classification through proposing alternative contexts and strategies?
Borrowing from the past – museum artefact as source for reinterpretation
You may like or loathe an artefact so much it inspires you to create your own version. Examine the role and function of the object you select. Consider its cultural origin and how this influences its physical appearance. ‘Unpick’ the narrative present in its form/decoration - what personal/collective memories and associations does the object conjure? Consider how the sampling of visual information or an object’s concept can be explored through a shift of techniques or materials. Think about how the traditions of the past can be reanimated using new media. Offer an alternative reading of the artefact /collection through your own gaze.
Proposal for direct intervention
How can the familiar visual vocabulary of the museum display or narrative of a specific object be disrupted by a contemporary intervention? Consider how the redisplay of objects from a variety of different museum taxonomies can be brought together in one environment to evoke new meanings. Explore site specificity at the Permanenten (or another site of interest) focusing upon ways of re-locating responses within the fabric of the museum architecture.
Reverse response
Create the work you want to create and establish connections with existing artefacts in a collection – Think how the juxtaposition and relationships with these could enhance dialogue and new meaning.
