Video I: Cinematic approach- Strategies and techniques of filmmaking.

“One can say that film direction is the transformation of visions, ideas, dreams, and hopes into pictures that are to convey these feelings to the audience in the most efficient manner. One creates some sort of medium, this long strip of film that reproduces one’s dreams through a lot of machines. Pictures to the feelings of others, to other people. I don’t know...”

Ingmar Bergman

Film is an increasingly influential aspect of contemporary art. This workshop aims at giving a compact introduction to the more technical aspects of low-budget film making. The workshop gives students whose works lean towards film as an artistic material, a handful of tools for screenplay development, direction, camera and crew collaboration.

The workshop will be held in two parts. The first week introduces students to the various stages of film production, from the development of the screenplay, tools and strategies of direction to lights and camera techniques. In the second week of the workshop, a film will be made on location outside of Bergen. The film will be made in collaboration with the workshop leaders in an intensive one-week long working period.

Arbeidsform:

In the first week of the workshop two classes will be held each day, on light and camera techniques and screenplay and directing. It will be possible for students to participate in both classes if desired.

Screenplay and directing

The class will depart firstly from a selection of filmmakers, by screening significant scenes from their movies that demonstrate their different strategies concerning narration and direction, secondly from a practical basis looking into how to develop and construct a functional screenplay in which the direction is an integrated focus, through all stages from the first idea to the execution of the shooting.

Light and camera technique

The classes give various demonstrations in light theory (indoor and outdoor), camera theory and technique. The workshop will have special emphasis on recording HD video on DSLR Camera.

Places available the first week of the workshop: 12

The second week of the workshop gives the students a unique opportunity to make a film in collaboration with the workshop leaders. The film will be shot on location in Eknes by Osterfjorden, one-hour drive from Bergen, giving students the experience of living and working together in an intensive 7-day work period. The workshop leaders will on the basis of a letter of motivation select the student crew consisting of three film photographers, three writers/directors, and three sound operators.

The letter should include your preference of role in the crew, your motives for participation, a short description of the relevance the workshop has for your work, and if you have previous experience with film.

For participation in the second part of the workshop either as film photographer, writer/director or sound operator send a letter of motivation to signe.karsrud@gmail.com by 3rd of October.

Note: sign up for the second week on Khib web as well as sending the letter of motivation. Places available the second week of the workshop: 9

Gilles Deleuze on cinema

In addition to the practical workshop and its focus on cinematic techniques, film screenings and a preparatory lecture in film theory will be given by associate professor Steven Dixon. The lecture looks at Gilles Deleuze's theory of cinematic images titled “Deleuze on Cinema: The temporal and the nullification of intention”. The lecture will take place October 19th at the lecture room 4th floor. Screenings of a selection of Deleuze's film references will take place on the 5th and 6th of October, at the academy in the 4th floor lecture room from 17:00-22:00. The screenings are highly recommended for all students attending Dixon's lecture in week 42 and students participating in the workshop. A complete list of films will be available on Khib web prior to the screenings. The screenings and lecture are open for all staff and students interested.
