(Re)Arranging Reality

In one version of Keith Arnatt's Trouser – Word Piece, the artist used a quotation from Sense and Sensibilia by British (analytic) philosopher J.L. Austin. In the quotation, printed on a two-sided card with the photograph on the other, Austin argues that to prove what something is, it is necessary to prove what it is not. The photograph promises something clear and uncomplicated and yet at the same time it is arousing questions and doubt in us. What is a real artist? Is he one? What is he and is the text his speech? Why is he stating this? What is this work about? Arnatt's piece is offering us a tool in discussing the question of the 'real' aspect of photography and lens-based media. It is also one example among a huge variety using photography as a tool in artmaking.
The project-/process-based workshop (Re)Arranging Reality is introducing and discussing different approaches to the usage of photography as a media within the field of fine art. What is the relationship betwen the working process, the subject, the object photographed and the resulting two-dimensional image?
The main focus of the workshop is in the production of individual work, both assisting and supporting distinctive expressional strengths and trying out different working methods.
Practise of communicational skills is carried out due to given individual presentations and discussions within the group.
No reading beforehand is acquired.
Arbeidsform:
Group seminars and discussions, presentations, individual tutorials and a lot of practical work. Times and dates are to be confirmed during the first two days of the workshop.
