Lecture: Art & Cannibalism
The legacy of the European avant-garde is partially based on strategies of disruption and agitation. From Surrealist juxtapositions and collages to Dadaist phonetic poems and street actions, art became a means for challenging established culture. As a complement to such legacy, methods of disruption take a deeper political and social stab at society in the case of Brazil. Since the 1960s, with the beginning of the military dictatorship, the notion of the disruptive artist was defined against the history of colonization: rather than attack bourgeois culture Brazilian artists sought to challenge the colonial culture existing within their own blood and language. Such a situation raised important questions, such as, how to undo the power structures embedded within the very heritage of Brazilian society, or how to find freedom when there is no escape from the very language of one's own identity. The notion of “Cannibalism” thus became a conceptual means for potentializing artistic work while forming a critique of colonial history: to eat the enemy was to take in, rather than to push out, the very forces already inside the body. Exploring the scene of Brazilian art, and the cannibalistic method, the lecture will investigate this history and strategy through specific artistic examples.
