Resurrecting the Obsolete 2. Appropriation and intervention of the ceramic ready-made

The second in a series of individual workshops. Not requiering partisipation in the first.

The use of found or ready-made objects as a raw material within the field of contemporary ceramics has been a relatively recent phenomena. Discipline specific artists have side stepped the traditions of manipulating ‘virgin’ materials towards the appropriation, intervention and re-contextualisation of objects displaced by the fashions of popular culture. Here, boundaries of taste and value are questioned and repositioned, and status of the obsolete elevated. This workshop will extend these concepts, and facilitate a variety of creative strategies that explore processes of object modification and the re-presentation of narratives imbued within such materials. Supporting lectures will give a contextual overview of artists and designers who have adopted this approach to open up further discussion and debate.

The project is less concerned with finished artefacts and aims to stimulate new starting points and trajectories for future investigation. In preparation for the workshop, participants will need to assemble a range of prefabricated ceramic materials and other found objects of interest (source eBay second hand stores etc). You may want to use your selected object as a raw material to directly manipulate, or employ the associations and narratives it communicates as a conceptual platform to explore a range of materials and processes. In formulating your interpretation and response the following questions/strategies may be considered:

Object History

Examine the role and function of your selected object. Consider its cultural origin and how this influences its physical appearance. Think about the journey of skills involved in its production. Consider the context of its consumption and value. ‘Unpick’ the narrative present in its form/decoration - what personal/collective memories and associations does the object conjure?

Object Intervention - Re-working the ready-made

How can the familiar visual vocabulary/narrative of your ceramic object be disrupted by a contemporary intervention? Consider the integration of other found materials in addition to the ready-made to shift interpretation. Explore strategies of ‘unmaking’, notions of transience/ permanence. Consider the process of image/object deconstruction and adaptation via methods of cutting and re-assemblage, altering through re-glazing and re-firing, re- moulding and construction.

Object as a starting point for other creative strategies

Consider how the sampling of visual information or an object’s concept can be explored through techniques or materials which extend or go beyond the immediate confines of the ceramic discipline. Think about the juxtaposition of traditional practices with new media, for example you may want to expose your intervention via photography or film. (Students to provide their own camera/ video camera).

Re-positioning meaning and context

How can status and value be re-assigned to the worthless or aesthetically insignificant? Think how the modification or integration of other materials can affect the status of ‘low-brow’ mass-produced materials.

Arbeidsform:

This will be a workshop based session, accompanied by practical demonstrations, lectures and tutorial discussion.
