Foundations in Computational Design
This four-week studio course is equal parts design, social critique, and play, exploring fundamental principles of computational design. The course will introduce key concepts unique to using computers, digital platforms, and the internet to develop design proposals that address contemporary cultural issues. At the same time, students will learn how to apply their traditional skills in composition, drawing and typography to the context of new media production. Hands-on studio exercises will experiment with the production of sound, image, time-based and interactive media, and net-based platforms. Design exercises will be framed and discussed through readings, screenings and group critiques engaging theory, history, and context for new media production within contemporary design fields.
Arbeidsform:
Students will be introduced to prototyping techniques and will be asked to conceptualize and design their projects in public or virtual scenarios. Collaboration and group work will be encouraged to maximize the benefits of cross-disciplinary skill sets. In addition to design exercises, periodic readings and participation in online forums, final documentation will be required. Other course requirements include: mandatory attendance, design exercises, presentations, online documentation of course work, and the active participation in a class and the course blog.
Krav til forkunnskaper:
Foundations in Computational Design is multidisciplinary in nature, combining aspects of critical theory, design, and technology. Students are not required to have any specialized technical experience, and those from various disciplines and backgrounds including, but not limited to, design, art practice, performance, textile design, and interior architecture are encouraged to enroll.
