Print as object

Souvenirs and Commemoratives - Print as Object 2011

Paul Scott

Paul Scott is well known for his research into the graphic nature of ceramic surfaces - through his work, exhibitions, books (Ceramics and Print and Painted Clay) and workshops held around the world. His courses have formed an important part of the developing knowledge in the field.

Souvenirs and Commemoratives - Print as Object will examine the role of prints on ceramics - their historical and contemporary manifestations, as well as an in-depth exploration of a wide range of transfer/print techniques.

Students will use drawing, painting, stamps, printing presses, photocopy and toner resist to explore the principles and possibilities of some of the following: mono-printing, relief printing, lithography, low-tech ceramic transfers and scree printing. Building on interlinking skills and processes students will be enabled to create relatively complex, rich multi-layered graphic ceramic surfaces. Materials will include paper, laserprint/photocopy, tissue, and plaster as transfer materials with a variety of easily available print media. We will also examine artwork preparation for screens, principles of ceramic decal making, as well as flexible, water-based transfer and direct printing methodologies.

Students will be expected to develop a body of work which documents the range of techniques explored as well as resolved printed ceramic objects embodying the contemporary commemorative or souvenir.

The outline programme is intended to be flexible to allow for the development of creative opportunities - it may be subject to change as the course develops. Illustrated lectures will be provided throughout the course some focussing on technical processes, others on the historical and contextual issues.
