RICHARD SLEE (UK): A Copy, an Appropriation? (2nd of two interconnected Masterclass projects)

What is the point in copying, when we strive for originality?

In the Traditional Academies it was believed that students of art learnt and progressed by copying and borrowing from earlier art. To copy nature was a discipline. Skills were taught by repetition.

Artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Richard Prince and Fischli and Weiss have copied objects and images from popular culture making, changing and appropriating these to give their objects new resonance. In music ‘sampling’ a form of appropriation has been a creative force since the 1960’s.

But choices in reproducing the chosen object will be made by the maker. What prompted the choice of object, what does it mean to you and others. How faithful are we to the original. Is the copy to be scaled up or down or the same scale? Does the plastic and textural nature of the clay, its modeling or construction mean that we have to interpret the object to fit the ceramic material? How do we see the finished surface? Do we change the originals meaning, if so in what way is our creation a homage or a critique of the original.
