Room Strategies - MA seminar/workshop

Buildings may be understood to lend dynamic input into our experiences, performing to condition and contour our place in the world and within particular social settings. The buildings we visit in the course of a day can be read as a spatial narrative mapping how we participate in a given community. And our particular behavior in certain buildings suggests how space influences our sense of self. Such questions find expression in a legacy of installation and spatial projects, in which rooms and buildings are incorporated into creative and critical work.

How might we research the very spaces we occupy, and uncover how they contribute to shaping our imagination? What new forms of spatial practice might arise in today’s cultural climate, where the local is also immediately networked into a greater context?

Investigating rooms and buildings, Room Strategies addresses the spaces around us. It will be structured in two parts: first, as a reading seminar focusing on specific texts that query the built environment as a performative arena, and second, as an intensive hands-on workshop aiming to materialize different perspectives on the rooms we inhabit. The final workshop will take place in Rom 8, and will use the room as a material, acting as a laboratory for experimental research onto its conditions: each day students will follow particular questions or themes, resulting in material traces that will accumulate in the room during the week. The seminar and workshop will deepen understandings of contextual thinking, spatial imagination, and architectural critique, as well as developing skills for installation and room practices.
