To Make V - Matthew L. Galpin / Stein Rønning

NOW WEEKS 41 , 42 and 47.

The world is not a stable place and things change.

The following is still valid:

The course To Make consists of two parts: maintaining the studio and reading / discussing - i.e. part of the business as usual for most artists. The small difference is that here we do it together and then with the aim to exhibit work at the end, without perhaps having actually finished any.

This is not a theory course in an academic sense, and it is not a usual workshop, but a hybrid, as the massage of the space made up on the one side, by the making practice of the studio, and on the other side by the thinking about what goes on in there, in a broad sense. What we usually do in the studio - to be shed light upon through short texts by Heidegger, Badiou, Deleuze and Osborne. What is the relationship between the maker and the something of her making, prior to and before someone else, by their observation, make it into theirs? And is there someone, or more precise: how many and who are present in the studio, already and well before the artist even start thinking of doing something there. The ongoing search for a footing in the studio and its context, or how to step into the circle and make a space for oneself in it. This kind of thing - or something like that.

The texts are:

Martin Heidegger ”The Origin of the work of art” (Legges også ut på norsk).

Alain Badiou – Truth procedures. (Text not yet decided).

Peter Osborne – ”Where is the work of art”.

Deleuze on Kant. (Text not yet decided).

There may be changes made to the composition of texts. They will be made available two weeks before

And the change is:

This workshop will now be in two stages and the first two weeks will be arranged as follows: Weeks 41 and 42: The course starts with two days presenting work. The following is partly the text seminar in the mornings and a 2+3 - staff +student smaller tutorial format in the afternoon where we discuss procedures, ways of making and whatever issues are present or relevant to the making of the work of the individual student. We summon up this on the last Friday and try to make sense of what is actually going on in the work for then to discuss clarification intensification precision etc. This kind of thing and of course the more general artistic questions present in the work.

This is due to the fact that the project room is not available – so we adjust. Perhaps we even as a group make a variation of the work format when we meet.

And:

The work in weeks 41 and 42 will be the preparation for week 47. We then have the project space for one week and our proposal is to work through that week to make a show on Friday. A stretching of the whole workshop but perhaps it is a good idea so that there is less of the making in one part and absolute full pull in the making in the second. More intense discussion and more intense making.

(We are aware that there is another course dealing with objects and their context in week 47 and this last part of the to make can be seen as a separate thing and no offence taken if some of you want to do the other course. We already know that some of you have signed on to it.)
