What Matters?
workshop with Duncan Higgins
Imagination Dead? – Imagine!
A workshop that will explore the idea of: To remember, one must imagine: Image/s and testimony.
How might you approach the idea of image making as: A record of an act, an event, a moment or a constructed narrative?
Key ideas:
- To explore and develop question and ideas about the production and presentation within your art practice in relation to making thoughts visible.
- Are there things that are un-say able or un-representational and why?
- Ideas of narrative structures and the complexity of the montage.
- The image as an “instant truth” or where “thought fails” or “fabricated instances”.
- How image/s might form a “lacunary” - an unfiled space or interval, a gap or missing element?
Part 1. Will focus on methods of making: What? How? Where? and When?
Part 2. Will focus on the critique of the image/s, forms of presentation/exhibition and the idea of the image as a political and emotional terrain.
The aim is to develop practical skills and critical reflection that can help the development of your current art production, contexts for presenting and emotional understanding.
Arbeidsform:
The workshop will be structured using the following: Individual and group tutorials, Group presentations and seminars. Practical workshops. Fieldwork – being out making work and site specific installation.
Central to the workshop will be an exploration of both the historical and contemporary conditions that may influence our understanding of particular images and image making processes today. What they might be? How they are constructed? Where they exist?
The intention is to have an exhibition/installation and web based presence of the work made during the workshop in the final week.
The course starts on Monday 11th of October, kl. 10.00 at Vaskerelven 8 (4th floor lectureroom)
