We see, hear, feel and move through space and the experience and our body is in constant dialogue with the physical form in which we exist. Aware and unaware we constantly register form, texture, scale and movement and in doing so we perceive and evaluate the architectural intentions and quality of the given space.
But what happens when one of our senses decrease in function, how do we experience space if we are unable to see, hear or walk and how does this affect the functionality of the given space? If the experience of architecture and form is multi-sensory, how can we as designers assure an accessible experience of architecture for all regardless of sensory ability?
Universal design is a new design concept focusing on physiological diversity and equal rights. Universal design points to the responsibility of the architect to design spaces for all, spaces for participation and social activities – and spaces for experience! Often functionality is considered the core issue of universal design but in this workshop we will focus on the senses – vision, hearing, touch and the kinaesthetic senses – and through these discuss the balance between aesthetics, functionality, architectural quality and universal design.
Arbeidsform:
Individual design assignment and in-class discussions. Lecture and discussions on the role of daylight, acoustics, texture, form and usability etc will form the basis for the design assignment A space for all senses.
You will work on the design project five intense days from Monday to Friday. We will end the workshop with a pin-up and discussion on Friday from 13.00-17.00.
