The danger of images?
• Can an image be dangerous?
• What might be a dangerous image today?
• How much can context change our understanding of an image?
The aim is to develop practical skills and critical reflection that can help the development of art production, contexts for presenting and emotional understanding.
The workshop will be structured using the following: Individual and group tutorials, Group presentations and seminars. Film screenings. Practical workshops. Fieldwork - out making work and site specific installation.
Week 1.
Monday 12th April to Thursday 15th
Your job is to begin to think about and start to make images that you find difficult or dangerous.
For example this may perhaps be because of the visual content of the image, it may be emotionally difficult, raise ethical questions, it may be culturally or politically difficult or dangerous.
The choice is yours so begin to define these conditions and questions.
The main emphasis during the workshop will be on the actual production, methods of production and contexts of display. So please don’t be hesitant about making things!!
It may be useful to open up these ideas by using very direct methods, e.g. drawing, making notes, collage, writing, going back through previous images you have made and re-editing or getting out and making new images in whatever is the most direct method for you.
Please remember that this is to be defined by your own conditions or reasons, in the same way you may want to address visual contexts that already exist as a way of exploring or questioning your own ideas for images.
At the same time please do some research into other images, art forms or contexts that can challenge or support the exploration and questioning you are starting?
Again, this may be historical precedents of which there are many, critical contexts that interest you in theory or very personal ideas you are developing.
Friday 16th April
10am We will all meet together. 3th floor lecture room Vaskerelven (4 etasje )
Your job is to prepare a short 15minute presentation that sets out the questions, ideas and exploration you have started. This can be as a digital presentation or simply with images, books and materials.
This should include examples of your own work and also the research of other visual material you are exploring.
This will be a group presentation and will be an open exploration of ideas, a point to share questions and look at the possibilities of how to develop your ideas.
We will also plan the timetable for the rest of the workshop.
The intention is to have an exhibition/installation and web based presence of the work made during the workshop in the final week. Details to be confirmed.
The workshop is open to students working in any media or have an interest theoretically in particular conditions that define images today.
