A Survey of the Experimental Film: the Artistic Media Formulation of Motion and Language.
Part of the "What does it" Series,
This Screening/lecture will give a historical sketch of the Experimental film and its uses by artists. Beginning with the moving abstractions of Richter and Man in the 1930’s and ending with narrative explorations of Elisabeth Charlotte "Pipilotti" Rist and Blu, we will investigate in this survey will explore the practice that artists used and what thoughts underlined of the material of film and how alternation (over time?) was construed as substance, or representation, by them. The Lecture-screening will be comprised of the entirety of the length of each film with contextualizing remarks about the art thinking and media language involved in the film/video. The lecture/screening will be 3 and ½ hours long and exhaustive to a trend in the Art language of film as developed by artists.
