Art in the public space

Today art in public space has a more vital position than ever. Many of the art world`s most marked actors show a broad specter of expressions outside the white cube: from traditional medias to light and electronics, transitory installations and permanent site-specific works. In the point of intersection between the community`s interest and respect for individual freedom lies a potent philosophical and ethical dilemma.

The art program for Bybanen will be used as case for this course. Through practical work, discussions, inspection, and individual tutoring the course will deal with different aspects of artistic statements in public space. Who owns the space, who can make a statement (and how)? Is it appropriate - and correct - to look at urbanity and nature as two separate phenomena? An interesting topic for discussion would be the idea of the autonomous or independent disciplines, and within disciplines: the independent working individuals. Furthermore, the concepts of power, identity and belonging will be important. Idea development and reflection will be stressed.

The course aims at planning individual work based on an urban space along Bybanen. Analysing space: which codes do we read? Presentation of and estimating individual project.
