Materialize it - Workshop med Helena Mutanen

The Swedish artist Helena Mutanen gives a workshop in Kunstakademiet week 4.

In the beginning of 2009 it was stated on an art site that "Arte Povera is everywhere." That was about the art scene in New York at the time. In another text the 2009 Venice biennial is described by curator Daniel Birnbaum as a binneial influenced by Arte Povera. The art form dates back to the Italian art reviewer and curator Germano Celant and means "poor art" (1967). In our time of crises and reflection it seems relevant that Arte Povera is on its way back when it comes to the substance and meaning of art. Arte Povera originated from substance, from material. The border between nature and culture was supposed to be ambiguous. It was about timebased processes, just like nature itself dies and is born again. Another interesting thing is materialism, a school within philosophy. According to materialism the world consists only of substance, matter, and exists independently of people and our ideas about structure and controll. During this week we will examine the concept of Arte Povera and use it as a basis for new ideas and new materials. We will discuss and put into practice materials and ideas relevant for the time we live in. The most important thing with this workshop is to start new processes of thinking, come up with new ideas etc.

Monday Introduction. Historical retrospect, pictures of works from the former leading Italian artists, show connection to present day. Pictures from ”Die Sammlung Marzona” at Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, an art collection in the genre. I will also show pictures and tell you about my own relationship with Arte Povera and how I got an interest in it.
I would like the group to focus on the relation and work from one concept only. Ideas can be derived from your own work, from memory, from experiments. Playfulness, impulse and action are key words. Discussion will play an important role in this workshop. Hence every day will start with a short group conversation. Topics to be discussed: How can we use different materials or use materials in different ways? What are the differences between our times "poor material" and the 60s`? What does "poor content" mean? Value versus material? Texts will be available every day.
Tuesday: Gathering/discussion. Afterwards I will make appointments for individual conversations with all students. .

Wednesday: Gathering/discussion. Individual conversations, individual work.

Thursday: Gathering/discussion. Individual conversations, individual work.

Friday 10:00 Final presentation of thoughts, ideas, texts, works. I find the process of thouhgt just as important as the final work.
