Theory week 4. Topic: Art in society - socieety in art
WEEK 15 (theory week 4)
This is the last in a series of 4 lectures for first year students at Dept of Specialised Art and Kunstakademiet
The topic "Art in society - society in art" directs your attention to the system of power that enters into and affects art production, from the artist to the mediator, from content to context. Under a fine-meshed network of relations (where the artistic activity or object is only one of several factors), the artistic value and the piece`s meaning will disappear. When seen from this point of view, art seems more like a cultural construction than nature. Meaning is created by construction. Meaning is produced by someone in a specific historical connection and from certain interests.
First day: Monday 12.04:
10.00: Introduction: The art object, art space, art scene - what is inside, what is outside? (Øystein Hauge)
10.30: Art that changed the world.
13.00: Frankfurterskolen (1930-1945) and the plans for an interdisciplinary, uniting theory on modern society. Key terms in the presentation: "The dialectics of knowledge" and "Cultural industry".” (Øystein Hauge)
Program for the rest of the week (tuesday to friday) will follow.
Workform:
”Art Since 1900” is the most important book. On pages 22 - 31 (”The Social History of Art: models and concepts) you will find the topic for week 14. The more you read, the more valuable impulses you will get. We invite you to participate in the discussions which will take place after each lecture.
Obligatory work after the course: All students (1BA) must write an assignment on the main topic (art and society). You will be given the assignment during the course.
Your work should contain about 1000 words and be handed in two weeks after the course is over.
