Theory weeke 3. Topic: ”Entusiastic aesthetics”

In the series of intensive lecturing weeks, his is the third. "The need for theory" was the main topic during the first week. The idea that every piece of art also contains an art theory is important. During theory week 2 we took a step further. The general headline was: ”applied art theory” – focusing on what is often referred to as ”depth models” in contemporary art.

In theory week 3 (week 02-2010) we will also talk about "applied art theory", but this time we will not squeeze the presentation into a frame. Every lecture arises out of the differnet theories`own research and experience. The lectures will deal with individual and universal criteria for quality, taste and judgmental power, aesthetics and special interests in the area of contemporary art.

Introduction: How to understand the contemporary ( work and context)

Second part: Put your head on the block - on how to make judgments in art critique. A survey of the last years` biennals/festivals and final exhibitions. (Øystein Hauge)
NB! First day: Tuesday January 12th.

Workform:

Art Since 1900” is the most important book. On pages 22 - 31 (”The Social History of Art: models and concepts) you will find the topic for week 14. The more you read, the more valuable impulses you will get. We invite you to participate in the discussions which will take place after each lecture.

Obligatory work after the course: All students (1BA) must write an assignment on the main topic (art and society). You will be given the assignment during the course.

Your work should contain about 1000 words and be handed in two weeks after the course is over.
