VIK WORKSHOP for fine art and design

The workshop is a cooperation with Kriminalomsorgen region vest, connected to the prison Vik fengsel in Sogn. Staying in Vik for 10-12 days.
We will focus on two aspects:
1. Suggestions on art and design and ideas for the running of the workshop at the prison, and for the prison`s architecture and spatial relations, surroundings, etc. Main purpose: Provide design and art strategies which will give the inmates a feeling of dignity and pride, and to produce suggestions for improvement of the physical environment.
2. Decoration of the Vik prison. New building/ Nybygg/exterior area. Sketching (suggestion or cpmpetition).
Vik prison is building a new wing with a completely new workshop. Hence, they have opened up for a discussion about the physical and psychosocial environment. They want to get in touch with young designers and artists for a dialogue. Questions of interest: How can art and design be a problem solver in different levels when it comes to functionality, physical environment and psychosocial needs for inmates and emloyees?
Art and culture is important when it comes to probation, in order to increase meaning in life and courage to see the truth, and also to prepare for a successful rehabilitation and returning to society. Meaningful running of the workshop is an important factor. To be able to engage thought and hands in creative tasks with originality and quality gives a feeling of dignity.
KHiB would like to organise an interdisciplinary course that seizes these problems.
A ten days stay in Vik + travelling. In advance we will give a half day seminar at school. The project will cover expenses such as travel and material costs (pursuant to budget). The students will have to pay for meals other than breakfast.
The participants will stay at the Hopstock hotel, situated neaar by the prison. Representatives from management and inmates will take part in the workshop.
The work will be connected to the needs promoted by the prison`s management in cooperation with the teachers and representatives from probation, but there will be an open dialogue with the students during the workshop. Morning meeting everyday with lectures, discussions etc.
Vik Prison: Vik prison is situated in Vik county in Sogn og Fjordane, facing the fiord. The ordinary capacity is of 32 persons.
The prison is well integrated in local society.
If this workshop works out fine, there is a possibility for a long term cooperation with the prison where the workshop might be an arena for cooperation for the students own works, prototypes etc.

Workform:
Working method: Workshop with a mixture of lectures, discussions, strategy planning and practical work. Visits in the prison, talking to employees and inmates. Talking to the locals.
Morning meeting everyday, gatherings at night.
Materials: Use what is at hand. Responsible for subject areas bring materials for model working.
The workshop is process oriented. Temporary expression, mockups, exhibition, prototypes. Possibility for realisation of project and ideas in the long term.
