Topic: Master thesis and writing process
Object:

  • to develop consciousness about genre according to the master thesis
  • to develop consciousness about genre according to the genre master thesis
  • to know the demands and quality criteria applicable to the master thesis
  • to present, analyse and evaluate your own project
  • to argue reasonably and convincing
  • to use suitable rhetorical means
  • to elaborate formalities in the master thesis in accordance with common academic standard, such as documentation, reference, quotation, notes, and list of literature)
  • to know and use aesthetical guidelines for writing
  • to use tools (e.g. speed writing) from process oriented writing in all stages in a project
  • to develop meta-consciousness according to your own writing and writing process.

Content:
The course will deal with topics relevant to the work on the master thesis and other academical texts. Topics such as characteristic features of general academic genres and especially the master thesis, objectivity, argumentation,rhetoric, meta-communication, reader consciousness, writing aesthetics, documentation, and formalities.
The course will amongst other answer the following questions:

  • What characterises academical texts, and which overall demands, criteria and conventions are related to the genre master thesis?
  • How can we present a project in a brief and catchy way?
  • How do we write a good summary?
  • What characterises the argumentation in academical texts?
  • How do we argue in an objective and convincing way?
  • Which rhetorical means do we use in academical texts?
  • What is good meta-communication?
  • How do you come forward as an author in the master thesis?
  • How do we obtain and use sources, and what is the best way of using quotation and notes?
  • What is writing aesthetics, and what does aesthetical guidelines for writing mean?
  • What are the principles for setting up lists of literature, notes and references?
  • How do we use tools and knowledge from process oriented writing in the work with master thesis and other assignments?


Workform:

Lectures, group work, individual presentations and discussions in plenary, writing and response training, preliminary reading of relevant specialist literature. The specialist literature will be available before the course starts up


Prequalifications:

Prequalifications:

The participants have prepared questions/problems and project description of master thesis (or a chapter draft of master thesis). Everybody should also answer a series of written assignments sent to you by e-mail before start-up. You send your answers to coordinator 3 days before start-up. You should spend 2-4 days on the assignment.

The course starts 12/01/2010 / Week 02, and ends 14/01/2010 / Week 02
