Project Noise - workshop Nordic Sound Art Programme

Noise functions as a primary theme within the practice of sound art and experimental sonic practices, giving way to methods of composition, sonic manipulation, and sound installation. The workshop will focus on noise as a subject, combining theoretical / historical presentation and discussion along with material production. Using noise as a main thread, a historical and theoretical overview of sound art will be mapped. From the Futurists “art of noise” through to Fluxus performance and the developments of sound installation and contemporary electronic works, aspects of found sound, broken music, and electronic effect will be explored as central to the history of sound art.

In addition, it will be the aim of the course to examine noise as disruption, interference, and displacement, and to locate noise within a strategy of working contextually: how might noise provide a key understanding onto contextual sound practice? As Michel Serres notes, noise acts to “rend any system open” thereby providing forms of “differentiation” onto the status quo. Noise is what initiates challenge, and transformation, to established conventions. Following such a view, students will develop sound projects in relation to a given system, such as a daily environment, language, or forms of representation, etc. Through a consideration of such a system, a project will be made specifically to disrupt, interfere, or displace, ultimately supplementing the given system. The project will provide a strong base for understanding how sound acts relationally, and will develop skills and methods for experimental sound composition, installation and performance.
