Public space

Designing a public space usually involves several disciplines working together. Ideally, the design process should involve all disciplines throughout the process – from inquiries, visions, goal and concept development. Such a cooperation is possible, due to the two subject areas within the design department.

Workform:

Goal:
Through cooperation with other disciplines and actual users, the students will get insight into and acquire experience in developing a concept for a specific public space. Working together with the subject area Furniture Design and Spatial Design/Interior Architecture, they will increase their understanding for interior architecture, and develop better knowledge of visual identity, orientation and information design.

Content:
Based on a given project (premises/building), the students will carry out inquiries and user analysis on the use of the given project, its users, which functions should be established, and what are today`s and tomorrow`s needs (analysis of use, needs, function and situation). The results will be presented in class through sketches.

Based on the inquiries, the students will continue developing a concept for the use of the premises/building and its interior. The concept should show new ideas regarding area planning and design, adjusted to the building and its use. Referring to defined users or various user functions, the concept will show how users can orientate through any information system in the building. The entire concept should be given an overall visual identity. Presented in class using area planning, collage and sketches of ideas.

Prequalifications:

Method: One student from each subject area are working together during the project. During the inquiery phase and development of conceptual ideas, they will be cooperating intensively. Later, they will divide the work between themselves but will still be discussing how to develop and carry out the project. Presentation of inquiries after the first week, and presentation of idea/concept after the second week. Presentation of implemented effects after four weeks.

The students at subject area Furniture Design/Interior Architecture will continue working on details for another five weeks.

The course starts 06/09/2010 / Week 36, and ends 01/10/2010 / Week 39
