Reading group: Artists on art
Artists on art: Poetics.
Reading group where we will be commenting and discussing texts on art written by modernist/post-modernist artists.
Instructor: Øystein Hauge
General approach: Writer and philosopher Italo Calvino's ideas about art and its many dilemmas. Calvino's texts are poetics in form, i.e. texts about the art of poetry.
Time: Week 5, 6 and 7. Tuesdays 13–15.
Audience: 2BA and 3BA Depts of Fine Art and Specialised Art. Students from other departments are welcome to participate. Max 12 participants.
Place: Vaskerelven
Reading group with two main objectives: Response (to ideas that each got during the reading of the texts), and discussion. Notion of art will of course be important. Everyone is encouraged to bring references (pictorial art, literature, movies, music etc.) and ideas that enlighten the essence of the texts.
Workform:
We will be using these sessions to further discuss fascinating ideas that emerge and develop in the friction between poetics (or ”aesthetic of the artist”) and creative art. Texts will be distributed prior to each session. Same arrangement as last time but with new texts by different artists. A minimum of participation (critical dialogue and discussion) is expected. The group is open for both new and former participants.
The reading list is being created. The following writers will be included:
Italo Calvino (”Letthet” from ”Amerikanske forelesninger”), Maurice Blanchot (”Litteraturens forsvinning”) Sol Lewitt (”Paragrafer om konseptkunst”). Supplement: Jon Fosse (”Negativ mystikk”), Trude Marstein (”Å se tingene i et nytt språk”), Pia Tafdrup (”Over vannet går jeg.”)
Prequalifications:
None in particular
