Reading group: Philosophers on art

Philosophers on art: languange and acknowledgement

”Philosophers on art”. Reading group based on texts by influential modern philosophers.

Instructor: Øystein Hauge

We will be using these sessions to take a closer look at the challenging yet necessary dialogue between theory/philosophy and creative art. Texts will be distributed prior to each session.

First part: Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) and Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913)

Later: Roland Barthes (1915–1980), Jacques Derrida (1930–2004) and Julia Kristeva (b. 1941)

Time: Week 39, 40 and 41. Tuesdays 13–15.

Audience: 2BA and 3BA. Depts of Fine Art and Specialised Art. Students from other departments are welcome to participate. Max 12 participants.

Place: Vaskerelven

Reading group with two main objectives: Response (to ideas that each got during the reading of the texts), and discussion. Notion of art will of course be important. How do these thinkers relate to art – and vice versa: Is contemporary art influenced by theory? Everyone is encouraged to bring references (pictorial art, literature, movies, music etc.) and ideas that enlighten the essence of the texts.

Workform:

Same arrangement as last year but with new texts by other philosophers. A minimum of participation – critical dialogue and discussion – is expected. The group is open for both new and former participants. This time the discussion will be based on a group of philosophers whose philosophy is based on language and speech. It is not the world around us that fills the language with meaning, it is the language that makes us look at the world as meaningful. The language comprises contrasts that form structures within a system of signs and symbols. According to Saussure and the early structuralism, this is how meaning is formed. A view that later brings us to post-modernism.
