SPACE LAB 2010 "New temporary space". The new spatial paradigm.

Using EXPO 2010 in Shanghai as a reference, where most countries are using experimental, temporary architecture in their exhibitions, this course will concentrate on what we can call "a new spatial paradigm". Traditional thinking is challenged by new technology regarding construction principles, form, and use of materials when working with architecture. All artists and various designers relating to space, also virtual, are challenged by the new expression in form made possible, which often breaks with the geometry of the straight line. As new technology is providing our creativity with new opportunities, there is an increasing focus on resource use, recycling, passive energy and ecology. Contradictory or not?

Due to new technology, light and colour are developing rapidly. For instance, there is a new type of transitoriness and changeability in the use of these effects. These problems are also conveyed in the subject of this course.

Inspiration: Touch the Earth Lightly

The Australian architect Glenn Murcutt, who was awarded the Pritzker price in 2002, often quotes the Aborigine proverb:

“Touch the earth lightly “

because it expresses his care for natural resources.

He says: "Life is not about maximizing everything, it's about giving something back - like light, space, form, serenity, joy."

His spatial structures respond to the landscape around them; they may be placed on stilts instead of standing on foundations deep in the ground. They harmonise with the movements of the light and wind, and are built from materials that are easy and inexpensive to manufacture.

Excerpt from the jury's arguments for the award: "Murcutt is an innovative architectural technician who is capable of turning his sensitivity to the environment and to locality into forthright, totally honest, non-showy works of art.

An example: Nestled in an arid Australian forest, Murcutt's Ball-Eastaway House hovers above the earth on steel stilts. Because there is no deep excavation, the dry soil and surrounding trees are protected.”

An African eco-group is conveying the subject in this way:

Touching the earth lightly is softening the footprint of people.

It is a way of living that expresses a relationship between humans and the earth based on custodianship, sensitivity and respect, that results in developments that have the least possible impact (both visually and physically) on the natural & cultural landscape, and that reflect both internally and externally, the “sense of place” evoked by the intrinsic qualities of the landscape.

The guidelines are:

  • developments should wherever possible have a sense of non-permanence and should if necessary, be easily removed from the landscape with minimal impact or permanent damage to the site
  • developments should strive to reflect and add value to the essential natural attributes of the landscape structures should be designed to be site specific and respond to the natural, cultural and biophysical attributes of the site
  • the natural landscapes should in effect “flow” through and over the structures wherever possible.”

Workform:

The new light-laboratory in Strømgaten will be available throughout the whole course period, 3rd week in particular.

The course comprises lectures (including external professionals, for instance Bård Helland from AHO (The Oslo School of Architecture and Design). This is however not yet confirmed.). These lectures will approach the subject “New, temporary space” from different angles. In addition, parallel spatial experiments where opportunities, effects and expressions are explored through simple materials – from models to full-scale installations, outdoor or indoor.

Working individually and in groups.
