Textiles – introduction to materials and dyeing, as a part of the course "What is art practice?"

Introduction to the subject area Textiles, based on basic knowledge of textile material, various methods of construction, dyeing, finishing process and some textile history. This will form the basis for your own experiments and experience, and to develop awareness of and reflection on textile and artistic problems.

Overview and necessary knowledge of various textile materials, their chemical and physical quality and how to use and shape them, and how they can be altered to achieve the desired expression. What is textile, textile expression and quality, and how to use textile materials and methods?

Overview of various methods of construction, e.g. spinning, twining, plaiting, weaving, felting, and stitch, knot and needle techniques. Overview of how to dye and finish different fibres, and practical training in the methods to be presented.

Introduction to textile history and the diversity of the subject area Textiles through surveys and literature during the period.

Training in health, environment and safety (HES) within this subject area.


Workform:

Lectures, examples of materials, discussions and working in the workshops. Form the basis for own choice of solution to the assignments.

The course is mandatory for 1st year students. Exchange students at Textiles and others may apply to participate.


Prequalifications:

None except ordinary entrance requirements for the Textiles study, or documented equivalent knowledge. Mandatory for all BA Textiles 1 students participating the main course "What is art practice?".
