Theory week 1. 1BA (Depts of Fine Art and Specialised Art)

About the programme:

During four intensive weeks – early and late in the term – we will be discussing general problems of contemporary art. Experiences from 08/09 are being evaluated. Framework will be slightly adjusted during the academic year 2010/2011. The book ”Art Since 1900” is still a reference for all elements of the theory programme.

Week 37: ”Contemporary art – introduction”; General art theory: modernism, anti-modernism, post-modernism. Trends and perspectives: the history of art and notion of art.

Workform:

We will facilitate interactive lessons where the students are encouraged to participate in discussions and ask critical questions after each lecture and presentation. This course offers a wide, varied and illustrated summary of various directions and expressions in contemporary art.

Note: Students complete each week by delivering a mandatory paper – an assignment of about 1000 words (3 pages) – based on the subject of the week or one (or more) headline(s) of the week. Deadline: Normally within 2 weeks after the week is completed. You will receive a short, written review. The text is included in the overall BA study documentation.

Instructors: Øystein Hauge (administrator), Anke Bangma, Steven Dixon, Wencke Qvale and Jorunn Veiteberg (lecturers).

Prequalifications:

You are encouraged to be familiar with the book "Art Since 1900" before the course starts.

The course starts 13/09/2010 / Week 37, and ends 17/09/2010 / Week 37
